Statement of Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez on the Observance of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2024

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On Monday, we will join with others throughout the country to commemorate the extraordinary legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is a moment to truly see each other as sisters and brothers in God’s one family and to recognize the suffering stemming from the mortal sin of racism. Bearing that witness compels us to be instruments of peace and healing.

The work of combatting racism follows Christ’s commandment to love one another as He loves us. Dr. King’s faith in our Lord led him to speak up and act. We must ask God to open wide our hearts and do the same because racism still scars our nation deeply.

We need to work for justice even when we have not done wrong or been wronged ourselves and every step is meaningful.

May Dr. King’s life inspire and challenge us to follow his example in the spirit of Missionary Discipleship with boundless energy and zeal. May we conquer sin by spreading the love of Christ and may God bless you!

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
