Solemn Funeral Mass For Most Reverend Martin N. Lohmuller

The Solemn Funeral Mass for Most Reverend Martin N. Lohmuller, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Titular Bishop of Ramsbury, will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. A detailed schedule follows below.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. the motorcade will arrive at the Cathedral. Bishop Lohmuller’s body will be transferred to the vestibule of Cathedral for the Rite of Reception of the Body. Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan, Vicar for Clergy, will preside over this brief ceremony. Midmorning Prayer for the Dead will be celebrated and Bishop Lohmuller’s body will then lie in state for public viewing until the casket is closed at 1:30 p.m.

 At 2:00 p.m. the Entrance Procession and Solemn Funeral Mass begin.  Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will be the principal celebrant. Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Powell, Pastor of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Parish, Jamison (Bucks County), will be the homilist. Bishop Lohmuller spent the last several years of his retirement in quiet residence with Monsignor Powell at Saint Cyril’s.  

Reverend Timothy J. Buckley, Parochial Vicar of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Parish, Jamison (Bucks County), Reverend Martin T. Cioppi, Pastor of Mother of Divine Providence Parish, King of Prussia (Montgomery County), and Reverend Anthony W. Janton, Pastor of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Abington (Montgomery County) will be among the principal celebrants.

 The Rite of Committal will take place immediately after the Solemn Funeral Mass has ended in the crypt of the Cathedral Basilica, which is located beneath the main altar. The casket will be carried to the crypt, prayer will be offered and Bishop Lohmuller’s remains will be committed to their final resting place.

The Archdiocese will also provide live streaming video on its website (www.archphila.org) beginning at 1:00 p.m. The live stream will conclude following the Rite of Committal.
