Mercy Hospice Celebrates National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month.

Mercy Hospice, a ministry of Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), is celebrating National Recovery Month.

Mercy Hospice, part of the Housing and Homeless Services Division of CSS, is a residential program offering stability and hope to single women and mothers with children experiencing homelessness and in recovery from substance abuse. Over the last two years, Mercy Hospice has served 180 women and 25 children.

Mercy Hospice will host a recovery walk in support of those in recovery and in remembrance of those loved and lost to addiction.

Mercy Hospice residents along with CSS staff and supporters will be joined by Most Reverend John J. McIntyre, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, for this prayerful initiative.

The evening will lead off with a prayer and blessing followed by a walk throughout Philadelphia’s Washington Square West neighborhood. The walk will conclude at CSS’s Women of Hope located on Lombard Street.

“We are proud to once again be taking part in National Recovery Month walking with and for those in recovery,” said Ms. Amy Stoner, director of CSS’s Community-Based and Housing and Homeless Services Division. “We all share a common responsibility to support our neighbors in need. CSS remains committed to strengthening our communities by assisting those in recovery find opportunities for new beginnings.”

In addition, dozens of current and former residents from Mercy Hospice along with their family, friends, and CSS staff, will join together and participate in the annual Pro-Act Recovery Walks sponsored by The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania. For over a decade, CSS has participated in this walk which celebrates recovery and seeks to end the stigma surrounding those suffering from addiction. This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Mercy Hospice services include life skills programs, case management services, recovery support groups, parenting education, recreational and enrichment programs, and child care in a safe and loving environment. A day program for non-residents is also available offering clients a safe, reliable place for lunch, showers, clothing, feminine hygiene and personal care products, and access to case management services.
