The start of the Chinese New Year varies from calendar year to calendar year as it is based on the lunar calendar.  This new year began on January 22, 2023 and is traditionally celebrated for at least two weeks.  Each year is represented by one of twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac.  This is the Year of the Rabbit.

Holy Redeemer is the first Catholic parish built in the United States specifically for Chinese Catholics.  In 1939, Bishop (later Cardinal) Paul Yu Pin of Nanking, China, visited Philadelphia.  Upon meeting Dennis Cardinal Dougherty and discovering that there was only one Chinese Catholic family in Philadelphia, the Archdiocese began evangelization and service in the Chinese Community.  For 80 years Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic School has educated children of immigrant families.  Many of its students speak English as a second language.
