Catholic Charities of Philadelphia’s Nutritional Development Services Seeks Community Partners to Host Summer Meal Sites

The Summer Meals Program runs from June 16 through August 22.

Nutritional Development Services (NDS), a ministry of Catholic Charities of Philadelphia, is seeking community partners to participate in its Summer Meals Program. This vital initiative ensures that children and youth aged 18 or younger throughout the Greater Philadelphia area have access to wholesome and nourishing meals at no cost when school is out of session.

Ms. Lizanne F. Hagedorn, Executive Director of NDS said, “During the summer months when schools are not in session, our priority is to make healthy meals available to children. This can only be accomplished through community organizations who are willing to distribute meals where children are present. NDS is grateful for any organization that is willing to collaborate in this effort to nourish the children in the Philadelphia area.”

NDS’ Summer Meals Program can be operated in various settings including schools, community centers, playgrounds, camps, parks, and churches. In addition, non-traditional settings can include WIC offices, libraries, apartment buildings, townhouse community rooms, Family Service Centers, and more.

All meals are delivered daily “ready-to-eat” and no preparation is required. Summer Meals sites provide breakfast and lunch. Meals include whole grains, low-fat milk, protein-rich foods, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. In addition, all meals follow federal guidelines for nutrition, and lunches provide children with 1/3 of their daily nutritional requirements.

In 2024, NDS’ Summer Meals Program served 279 sites throughout the Greater Philadelphia area and provided approximately 333,000 meals to children. The Summer Meals Program is federally funded and operated nationally by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In this region, it is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
