Catholic Charities Appeal Becomes Official Sponsor for Live Streaming Broadcast of Sunday Mass from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul
The 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass is broadcast live on Archbishop Pérez’s Facebook page and the Archdiocesan Vimeo Channel.
It reaches tens of thousands of people locally and around the world each week.
Today, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is pleased to announce that the Catholic Charities Appeal (CCA) has become the official sponsor of the live streaming broadcast of the Sunday Mass celebrated each week at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
This sponsorship will enable the Church of Philadelphia to continue bringing the sacred liturgy into the homes of tens of thousands of people locally and around the world who are not physically able to gather for the celebration of Mass in their local parish church.
Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia, said, “I am deeply grateful to the Catholic Charities Appeal for their generosity. Thanks to this great gift, we are able to significantly improve the spiritual lives of our sisters and brothers who are not able to gather at the Lord’s table in person.”
Mr. Ernest Russom, President of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Charities Appeal said, “Through the generosity of our donors, the Appeal allows the Archdiocese to bring nutrition, clothing, education, and hope to one of every five people who live in Southeastern Pennsylvania. It is an honor to extend our support of the Archdiocese as it provides spiritual nutrition to our region.”
About the Live Stream Mass
In March 2020, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia began streaming the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass live from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2021, the Archdiocese launched the Nothing Compares to Being There initiative, which presented parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia with an opportunity to personally invite their parishioners to return to the in-person celebration of the Mass after the many long months of the pandemic. It drew upon the central truth of our Christian faith that Jesus Christ encounters and saves us in the flesh, through in-person presence and celebration of the Eucharist.
Everyone is reminded of the irreplaceable need to attend in-person the celebration of Sunday Mass. Those who are sick, have a health risk, or are a primary caregiver are excused from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday. As a result, the Archdiocese continues to stream this Mass as a service for those who would be unable to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist otherwise.
