Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Secretariat for Catholic Human Services Releases 2022 Annual Report

The report highlights a tremendously positive impact on the lives of over 600,000 people in need throughout the five-county region.

The Secretariat for Catholic Human Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CHS) positively impacted 608,699 adults, children, seniors, and families throughout the five-county metropolitan area in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2022.

CHS provided critical support and vital assistance to more than half a million individuals through its three agencies: Catholic Social Services (CSS), Catholic Housing and Community Services (CHCS), and Nutritional Development Services (NDS).

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, approximately 10,300 parents received essential baby care items; 6,400 clients received pregnancy and parenting services; 54,300 personal care and feminine hygiene products were distributed; 500 children and youth were served in after school and summer camp programs; 300 individuals experiencing homelessness received shelter; 2,800 seniors benefitted from senior centers and parish programs; 26,300 households received groceries; 500 persons with intellectual disabilities were served in residential and community day programs; and 1,340 at risk youth were served in group homes, foster care, and community based services.

CSS also continued delivering core social safety net programs that protect households from entering poverty. Around 270 individuals were connected to stable and affordable housing and 170 individuals received rent, mortgage, and utility assistance through CSS. CSS is the largest provider of FEMA funded emergency rental, mortgage, and utilities assistance in Philadelphia.

In addition, NDS provided over 7.4 million meals to those facing food insecurity with 5.6 million meals coming through the federally funded Child Nutrition Programs and 1.8 million meals coming through NDS’ privately supported Community Food Program. NDS’ Community Food Program supports a network of 50 food cupboards throughout the Greater Philadelphia region including five food cupboards operated by CSS, five soup kitchens, and numerous community outreach programs.
