Archdiocese of Philadelphia to Celebrate Feast of Saint Katharine Drexel with Solemn Mass

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will celebrate the feast day of Saint Katharine Drexel with a Sung Mass at the Cathedral Basilica.

Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, will serve as the principal celebrant and homilist. Confessions will be available prior to Mass at 11:30 a.m.

The Way of the Cross will take place in the Cathedral Chapel following the 12:05 p.m. Mass. In addition, Holy Hour will be held in the Cathedral Chapel at 8:00 p.m.

Background on Saint Katharine Drexel
Saint Katharine Drexel was canonized on October 1, 2000. Born into great wealth as part of the Drexel family, she gave up her life of privilege to found the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1891. She dedicated her life to serve the needs of African Americans and Native Americans, and inspired so many women, who joined the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, to follow her example.

The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation continue to serve in elementary and secondary schools as well as at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, and a variety of other pastoral and spiritual ministries.

Editor’s Note: Saint Katharine Drexel remains were translated to a tomb at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in 2018 from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament’s Motherhouse in Bensalem, PA. The tomb is located next to the Drexel Family altar inside the cathedral near the main entrance. The Cathedral Basilica is open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for visits to Saint Katharine Drexel tomb.
