Archdiocese of Philadelphia Breaks Ground for St. John Neumann Place II
Catholic Health Care Services (CHCS) and the Office for Community Development (OCD) will break ground for the new St. John Neumann Place II, an affordable housing development for independent seniors.
The newly constructed building will consist of 52 one-bedroom apartment units and a Wellness Center on a parcel of land adjacent to St. John Neumann Place, which has been in operation since 2008 and represents the successful conversion of the former St. John Neumann Catholic High School into 75 units of affordable senior housing.
The St. John Neumann Place II development was selected by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) to receive a $12 million dollar tax credit allocation for the development of additional affordable senior housing on the campus of the former St. John Neumann Catholic High School in South Philadelphia and gave the development the award for Innovation in Design.
“This completion of this campus is the culmination of a vision that began over a decade ago. This community wanted this space to continue to be vital to the fabric of the neighborhood. With the help of many people this vision has become a reality,” says John M. Wagner, deputy secretary and chief executive officer of CHCS.
St. John Neumann Place II will also receive assistance from the Philadelphia Housing Authority in the form of project based vouchers through the HUD Rental Assistance Demonstration program (RAD).
“We are proud to partner with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to serve seniors by expanding affordable housing and health services here in South Philadelphia,” said PHA President and CEO Kelvin Jeremiah. “PHA is supporting the St. John Neumann campus through HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration Program with an investment of $9.9 million over the next 20 years. It’s an investment that reflects PHA’s desire to work hand-in-hand with mission-driven organizations like the Archdiocese.”
The development is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2017.
