1933 – 2020
Retired Permanent Deacon James M. Tormey, died on Saturday September 19, 2020, at his home in Camden, Delaware, after a long battle with cancer. He was 87 years old. Deacon Tormey was ordained at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on May 29, 1988, by Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. He was assigned to Our Mother of Consolation Parish, Philadelphia, and remained there until October 2003, when he was released to outside service in the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware. While serving the Diocese of Wilmington, Deacon Tormey was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish, Marydel, Maryland, until his retirement on January 31, 2020.
Deacon Tormey was born on February 11, 1933 in Philadelphia to John F. Tormey and Helen M. (Callahan) Tormey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Sr. Winifred Tormey, SSJ and M. Barbara Tormey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Ann Tormey (nee Dornberger) and his four children: James M. Tormey Jr., Erin Irwin, Colleen Markham, Christopher Tormey, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild expected in the coming months.
Deacon Tormey was a retired Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine (D.C.) in private practice. After graduating from Saint Joseph’s College, he attended the Cleveland Chiropractic College, located in Kansas City, MO, Class of 1976. He also served in the U.S. Army, and spent two years overseas during the Korean conflict.
Reception of the body and viewing will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2020, beginning at 10:00 AM. Followed by his Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon, at Immaculate Conception Parish, 522 Main Street, Marydel, Maryland 21649. The principal celebrant and homilist will be Reverend John T. Lyons of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Deacon of the Mass will be Deacon Sherman Mitchell of the Diocese of Wilmington.
