On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the College and Theology seminarians of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary will return to campus to mark the start of the 192nd year of formation and the last year of formation at the Overbrook campus before the seminary relocates to a new campus in Lower Gwynedd in the summer of 2024. In total, 147 seminarians are expected to enroll at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary for this 2023-2024 year, which includes 36 new seminarians.
Earlier this summer, Archbishop Nelson Pérez announced Reverend Christopher Redcay as Director of Spiritual Formation for the Theological Seminary.
“We are so grateful to God for the sign of hope that these new seminarians bring. Our dedicated seminary faculty and staff are looking forward to helping them further grow as disciples of Jesus, and discern their potential vocation to the priesthood,” said Fr. Chylinski. “It is a joy and privilege to welcome them to Mother Overbrook for the first time as “new men” to the seminary.”
The Opening Day schedule includes move-in, Mass, orientation, Solemn Evening Vespers followed by a formal Rector’s Dinner with the entire seminarian student body and resident priest faculty.
Among the 36 new seminarians beginning their journey at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary this fall, 15 are new seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In total, there are now 72 seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
In addition to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, more than 14 dioceses and religious orders send their seminarians to Saint Charles for formation.

Background on Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary was founded as the Roman Catholic seminary for the Diocese of Philadelphia in 1832, making it the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the state of Pennsylvania. As of August 2023, the Seminary has an overall enrollment of 147 seminarians, 72 of which study for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. There are 36 new seminarians enrolled this fall, making it one of the largest incoming classes in several years. Thanks to the prayers and generosity of so many people, the seminary has been able to continue its mission of forming future priests continuously for the last 192 years, both for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as well as many other dioceses and religious orders throughout the country and around the world.
