Seminarians Move-In to Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary to Kick-off 2021-2022 Academic Year

149 seminarians enrolled at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary for the 2021-2022 academic year, including 66 seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

On Tuesday, August 17th, the College and Theology seminarians of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary returned to campus to mark the start of the 2021-2022 academic year.  149 seminarians, including 27 new seminarians, are enrolled at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

“We give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of these new vocations and the dedicated seminary faculty and staff who will guide their discernment to the priesthood,” said Bishop Timothy C. Senior, Rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. “We are all inspired by the courage and commitment of these new seminarians and their willingness to devote themselves to a life of service to others.”

Move-in day included an opening Mass, evening prayer, and Rector’s Opening Conference. The day concluded with a Rector’s Dinner.

Among the 27 new seminarians beginning their journey at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, 12 are new seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Five of the seminarians are entering the college seminary, four are entering the Spiritual Year or Pre-Theology, and two are entering the theological seminary. In addition, one seminarian is entering the seminary’s newly established ESL program which seeks to meet the needs of seminarians who speak English as a second language with a special emphasis on theological and philosophical terms common in seminary coursework. In total, there are 66 seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Saint Charles’ seminarian population is becoming increasingly diverse. Approximately 38% of its students are non-Caucasian specifically Asian, Pacific Islander, Latino, Hispanic, Black or African American.

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary plans to follow its regular calendar for onsite formation and education for the Fall 2021 semester while adhering to CDC and state and local health recommendations.

Founded in 1832, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been forming men for priestly service in the Catholic Church for more than 180 years. In August 2021, the seminary expected an overall enrollment of 149 seminarians.  Saint Charles’ seminarian population is becoming increasingly diverse with approximately 38% of its students now coming from Asian, Latino, or African countries. Of the 27 new seminarians, 12 are seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and there are 66 new or returning seminarians for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia studying at St. Charles.
