Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary to Award Honorary Degree to United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito

Justice Alito will also deliver an address at the Seminary’s Annual Concursus

 Today, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary announced that it will award a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, to United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito at its Concursus ceremony on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. Justice Alito will also give the Concursus address.  Concursus is the seminary’s annual graduation ceremony where academic degrees are awarded to seminarians as well as religious and lay students enrolled in its college and graduate degree programs.

The Seminary’s Rector, Bishop Timothy C. Senior, said, “Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is extremely pleased to honor Justice Alito for his outstanding legal contributions to our nation and for his unswerving dedication to public service. The Seminary community looks forward to welcoming him and to what he will share with us.”

Justice Alito will join a distinguished list of honorary degree recipients from the Seminary including Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Judge Genevieve Blatt, Mr. William Fishman and Pennsylvania Chief Justice Robert N.C. Nix, inter alios.

Justice Samuel A. Alito was born in Trenton, New Jersey, April 1, 1950. He married Martha-Ann Bomgardner in 1985, and has two children – Philip and Laura. He served as a law clerk for Leonard I. Garth of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1976–1977. He was Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey, 1977–1981, Assistant to the Solicitor General, U.S. Department of Justice, 1981–1985, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice, 1985–1987, and U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey, 1987–1990. He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1990. President George W. Bush nominated him as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and he took his seat January 31, 2006

Founded in 1832, the Seminary has served as a leading institution in the formation of Catholic men for the Priesthood in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and dioceses throughout the country for over 180 years. The seminary is currently experiencing a resurgence in enrollment with increases of 20% and 13% in the last two years.
