Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary to Award Honorary Degree to Professor Andreas Widmer

Professor Widmer is on faculty at the Catholic University of America, an Entrepreneur, Author
and a Former Member of the Swiss Guard

Today, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary announced that it will award a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, to Catholic University of America Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship Andreas Widmer at its Concursus ceremony on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Professor Widmer will also give the Concursus address.  Concursus is the Seminary’s annual graduation ceremony where academic degrees are awarded to seminarians as well as religious and lay students enrolled in its college and graduate degree programs.

The Seminary’s Rector, Bishop Timothy C. Senior, said, “Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is extremely pleased to welcome Professor Andreas Widmer, and to honor his diverse and unique contributions in service to the Church. The seminary community looks forward to learning more about the path of Professor Widmer’s own vocation, his enterprise solutions to poverty, and how he has used this approach in the service of Catholic Social Teaching.”

Professor Widmer will join a distinguished list of honorary degree recipients from the Seminary including Justice Samuel Alito, Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Judge Genevieve Blatt, Mr. William Fishman and Pennsylvania Chief Justice Robert N.C. Nix, inter alios.

Background on Professor Andreas Widmer

Andreas E. Widmer was appointed Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship in the fall of 2015 at The Catholic University of America’s Busch School of Business & Economics. He is the director of the Art & Carlyse Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship.

Previously, Widmer co-founded The SEVEN Fund, a philanthropic organization promoting enterprise solutions to poverty. Andreas is a seasoned business executive with experience in high-tech, international business strategy, consulting and economic development.

He is the author of The Pope & The CEO: Pope Saint John Paul II’s Lessons to a Young Swiss Guard, a book exploring leadership lessons that Widmer learned while serving as a Swiss Guard protecting Pope John Paul II and refined during his career as a successful business executive.

Background on Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary

Founded in 1832, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been forming men for priestly service in the Catholic Church for more than 180 years.  In August 2017, the seminary reported an overall enrollment of 167 seminarians, an 11% increase over the spring 2017 enrollment and the largest overall enrollment since 2004. Of the 43 new seminarians including one student priest, 11 are seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
