Archbishop Gudziak, current Archeparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and Harvard scholar, will give the Concursus keynote address to 44 seminary graduates
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary will award a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, to Archbishop Borys Gudziak at its 2020 Concursus ceremony on May 13, 2020. In addition to receiving this honor, Archbishop Gudziak, the Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the United States, will give the Concursus’ keynote address. Concursus is the Seminary’s annual graduation ceremony where academic degrees are awarded to seminarians, as well as religious and lay students, enrolled in its college and graduate college programs.
Bishop Timothy C. Senior, the Seminary’s Rector, said, “As the Seminary graduates yet another astounding class of seminarians and graduate students, it is an honor for Saint Charles Seminary to present a Doctor of Humane Letters degree to such an accomplished scholar and figure in global Catholicism. We are thrilled to have Archbishop Gudziak join us this spring and we look forward to the wisdom he will impart to us that day.”
The Seminary’s honorary degree will be conferred by Archbishop Nelson Perez on behalf of the Saint Charles Seminary Board of Trustees. Archbishop Gudziak will be among a distinguished list of honorary degree recipients from the seminary, including Dr. Jacqueline C. Rivers, Professor Andreas Widmer, Justice Samuel Alito, Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta and former Pennsylvania Chief Justice Robert N. C. Nix.
Archbishop Gudziak has studied at renowned institutions throughout the world, including Syracuse University, Harvard University and the Pontifical Oriental Institute. In Lviv, Ukraine, Gudziak founded and directed the Institute of Church History and became President of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Gudziak was appointed Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Switzerland, and was most recently appointed by Pope Francis as a member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.
Archbishop Gudziak’s scholarly works include his doctoral dissertation on sixteenth-century church history, Crisis and Reform: The Kyivan Metropolitante, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and the Genesis of the Union of Brest.
About Saint Charles Seminary Founded in 1832, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been forming men for priestly service in the Catholic Church for more than 180 years. In August 2019, the seminary reported an overall enrollment of 165 seminarians. Saint Charles’ seminarian population is becoming increasingly diverse with approximately 30% of its students now coming from Asian, Latino, or African countries or nationalities. Of the 42 new seminarians, 19 are seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and there are 75 new or returning seminarians for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia studying at St. Charles.
