Reverend Monsignor John M. Galyo, Pastor Emeritus, Sacred Heart Parish, Phoenixville and Pastor Emeritus, Holy Trinity Parish, Phoenixville, died at Villa Saint Joseph on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
Monsignor Galyo was born on September 23, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John Galyo and the late Mary Hamas. Monsignor Galyo attended Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School, Edwin H. Vare Junior High School, and Southeast Catholic High School before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary
Monsignor Galyo was ordained on May 8, 1954, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Archbishop John F. O’Hara, C.S.C. and named an Honorary Prelate of His Holiness Pope John Paul II on May 29, 1991. Monsignor Galyo served as Assistant Pastor, Immaculate Conception Parish, Marcus Hook; King of Peace Parish, Philadelphia; Our Lady of Charity Parish, Brookhaven; Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Philadelphia; Saint John the Evangelist Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Bartholomew Parish, Philadelphia. Monsignor Galyo also served as a Chaplain, State Correctional Institute, Graterford and Chaplain, Catholic Daughters of America as well as Parochial Administrator, Holy Trinity Parish, Pottstown. Monsignor Galyo was appointed Pastor, Sacred Heart Parish, Phoenixville in 1978.. In 1999 Monsignor Galyo was appointed Pastor, of the twinned Parish, Holy Trinity Parish, Phoenixville. In 2002 he was named Pastor Emeritus of both Sacred Heart Parish, Phoenixville; Holy Trinity Parish, Phoenixville.
A parish Mass will be held at 6:00PM on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Sacred Heart Church, Phoenixville, preceded by a viewing at 5:00PM. The Reception of the Body will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 9:00AM at Saint Eleanor Church, Collegeville, also followed by a viewing.
Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Galyo at Saint Eleanor Church, Collegeville on Monday, March 2, 2015, at 10:30AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend James W. Gormley, Reverend Monsignor Richard J. Skelly, Reverend Monsignor Bernard J. Trinity, and Reverend Monsignor Ralph J. Chieffo. Monsignor . Chieffo will be the homilist.
Monsignor Galyo is survived by his sister, Mary Gallagher and many nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
