Saint John’s Hospice (SJH), a ministry of Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), and Troop 544 of the Girls Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania will work together to prepare 200 casseroles for SJH’s kitchen. SJH serves meals to its residents and hundreds of community members experiencing homelessness per week, with casseroles being a critical source of nutrients for their daily intake.
Radnor High School’s “Casseroles for a Cause” school club and other local Girl Scout troops and community organizations will also be in attendance to provide support.

“Casseroles for a Cause” was inspired by three Girl Scout Cadettes who learned about SJH’s seasonal shortages in the summer months and wanted to take action. Their Girl Scout Silver Award Project challenges Scouts to learn about an issue and create a solution. A Troop 544 Girl Scout Ambassador together with a fellow student who has been making casseroles for over 10 years for SJH created the “Casseroles for a Cause” high school club to sustain these efforts and build awareness on how students can make a local impact on the problem of homelessness.

Editor’s Note: SJH was established in 1963 by Monsignor Anthony J. O’Neill, Pastor of Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Center City Philadelphia, and The Little Brothers of The Good Shepherd, as an outreach ministry to serve and assist those experiencing homelessness and poverty in Philadelphia. Today, SJH has residences that serve approximately 150 individuals transitioning from homelessness to independent living annually, meal services for more than 200 community members each day, mailroom services for more than 1,700 individuals, as well as case management and medical and behavioral healthcare services.
