Students and teachers highlight academics and fine arts in parochial elementary schools during “Showcase of Excellence,” which this year will be held at six satellite locations
During the months of March and April, over 65 Parochial and Private Catholic elementary, Independence Mission Schools, and Schools of Special Education throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will participate in one or more “Showcases of Excellence,” which will be held at six satellite locations including two university campuses, three Archdiocesan high schools, and one parish each in Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. The elementary Showcases highlight the strong academic and fine arts programs in Catholic elementary and special education schools throughout the five-county Archdiocese.
Sister Edward William Quinn, I.H.M., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, is the force behind the annual “Showcase of Excellence.” She coordinates the locations and participating schools. She said, “There are many wonderful things happening in our schools. Most of us are aware of the concept of STEM as an initiative showing the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. In our schools we like to think of it as “STREAM” as we integrate Religion and the Arts into the total picture of learning. The Showcases are a way of sharing the talents and work of our students and their teachers with the broader community.”
During each “Showcase of Excellence” students will display artwork reflective of the Archdiocesan K-8 art curriculum. Musical performances will include instrumental, band, and choral music. Religion projects, Science Fair displays, Future Cities displays, STREAM projects, binders of students’ writings, videos of student presentations on laptops, robotics, and theater arts performances are also integral parts of the program.
Mrs. Debra Brillante, Superintendent for Elementary Schools said, “The Showcase of Excellence events will provide the perfect venues for highlighting the many gifts of our Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic School students and their teachers. We are proud to exhibit some of our finest work and share our extraordinary talents with the greater Philadelphia community.”
