Nutritional Development Services Of The Archdiocese Of Philadelphia Awards “Garden Grants” To Local Food Cupboards

For the third consecutive year, Nutritional Development Services (NDS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Community Foods Program has awarded “garden grants” to food cupboards throughout the greater Philadelphia area. The grants, funded through a special appeal, will increase access to fresh, wholesome, and nourishing produce for clients.

One awardee, DePaul USA, a national homeless services organization, plans to hold a Garden Dedication celebrating the creation of an organic garden at Saint Raymond’s House.

Peggy Robertson, Director of Foundation Giving for DePaul USA, said, “The garden will increase access to fresh vegetables and provide nutritious meals for formerly homeless men and women with disabling health conditions who reside at Saint Raymond’s House. With five raised beds, two outdoor benches, and two raised planter boxes, the garden will be a space of growth and beauty to be enjoyed by residents, staff, and visitors.”

Ms. Brooke Mullen, Assistant Director of Community Relations for NDS, said “NDS is delighted to provide garden grants to local food cupboards. These grants allow cupboards to learn about gardening as well as the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables, and importantly, facilitate a sense of fellowship within the cupboard community.” She went on to say, “For many of our cupboards, the garden creates a bridge across cultures, languages, and life experiences, offering unity and meaningful relationships.  Our hope for the grants is to continue to provide a positive meeting place for individuals to share in the joy of growing their own foods.”

For over forty years, NDS’ mission has been to serve children and those in need with healthy food and food-related resources. NDS accomplishes its mission in two distinct ways: by administering the federally-funded child nutrition programs and through the privately supported Community Food Program.
