Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez To Celebrate Solemn Mass For The Opening Of The Diocesan Phase Of The Synod Of Bishops At The Cathedral Basilica Of Saint Peter And Paul

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will be the principal celebrant and homilist at the Solemn Mass marking the opening of the Diocesan Phase of the Synod of Bishops called for by Pope Francis to take place throughout the Universal Church. This liturgical celebration in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is in solidarity with the Holy Father’s initiative and Roman Catholic dioceses throughout the world who will open the diocesan phase of the Synod on this day.  

All priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia have been invited to concelebrate the Mass, which is intended to manifest the participation of all members of the local church in the fullest possible way.

Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation will also be available from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Cathedral Basilica.

The Opening Mass will be followed by a period of consultation within the local Church on the theme for the XVI Synod of Bishops which concludes in April 2022.

The XVI Synod of Bishops will take place in three phases, the Diocesan Phase, the Continental Phase and the Universal Phase, from October 2021 through October 2023. The theme of the Synod, For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission, anticipates serious reflection and action to deepen an understanding of the role of all the members of the Church, journeying together with Christ as our Head, in living the Gospel in our time.
