Reverend Monsignor Charles J. Monaghan, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Joseph Parish, Collingdale, died at Saint Francis Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare on Wednesday, December 9, 2015.
Monsignor Monaghan was born on March 31, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Charles J. Monaghan and the late Mary Doherty. Monsignor Monaghan attended Ascension of Our Lord and Saint Hugh of Cluny Parochial Schools, Philadelphia, and Northeast Catholic High School for boys, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Monaghan was ordained on June 7, 1941, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence Dennis Cardinal Dougherty and named Honorary prelate to His Holiness Pope Paul VI on September 13, 1965. Monsignor Monaghan served as Parochial Vicar at Our Mother of Mercy Chapel, Philadelphia. Monsignor Monaghan also served on the faculty at Saint James Catholic High School for Boys, Chester, from 1941 through 1954. Monsignor Monaghan served at Villa Saint Joseph, Darby from 1954 through 1970, as Vice Rector and then Rector Monsignor Monaghan served as Pastor at Saint Hugh of Cluny Parish, Philadelphia for ten years. In 1980, he was appointed Pastor, Saint Joseph Parish, Collingdale, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 1990.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Francis Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare, on Monday, December 14, 2015, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Monaghan, at 11:00 AM., concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor William Dombrow, Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan and Reverend Thomas M. Sodano. Father Sodano will be the homilist.
Monsignor Monaghan is survived by his cousins, Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
