Inaugural Art Contest Gives Older Adults Opportunity to Create Official Christmas Card Cover for Catholic Housing and Community Services

This fall, Catholic Housing and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CHCS) announced its inaugural Christmas Card Design Contest in its senior housing, senior center, and parish eldercare programs across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

CHCS’ senior housing residents, senior center program participants, and parish eldercare program participants were invited to create an original design depicting the “Peace of the Christmas Season” to be selected and reproduced for the official 2020 CHCS Christmas Card. The winning entry was submitted by Lorraine K. a resident at Saint Francis Villa located in Philadelphia’s Kensington section.

A handful of designs from older adults who benefit from CHCS’ programs and services were received. CHCS staff members were tasked with judging entries.

Ms. Heather Huot, Director of CHCS said, “In a year when we have all been struggling with isolation and uncertainty, CHCS wanted to send a message of hope and peace this Christmas. We are delighted to be able to share that message through the artwork of our very creative and talented older adults. We hope that everyone that receives one of our Christmas cards this year is uplifted by the beautiful artwork and reminded of the spirit of Christmas.”

In addition to the winning submission, four additional seniors were recognized for their creative designs:

  • Jacqueline S.- Saint John Neumann Place (South Philadelphia)
  • Anne C.- Holy Saviour Parish Eldercare Program (Montgomery County)
  • Jewel H.- Saint Edmond Senior Community Center (South Philadelphia)
  • Kay B.- Saint Edmond Senior Community Center (South Philadelphia)
