Retired Permanent Deacon John C. Hynes, aged 92, passed away on April 24, 2024. He served as a Permanent Deacon for 45 years, holding the distinction of being the longest-tenured deacon in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Deacon Hynes was ordained for the Diocese of Camden on October 4, 1978, by the Most Reverend George H. Guilfoyle. He transferred to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1990. He was assigned to Maternity B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia, where he remained until his retirement in 2006. In 1998, Deacon Hynes was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and one year later, he received a secondary assignment as an approved advocate for the Office of the Metropolitan Tribunal. He remained in this position until 2008, even though he retired from active ministry two years earlier.

Deacon Hynes held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, which he earned from LaSalle University in 1958. He was a retired salesman for an industrial supply company and married the former Mary Cruice in 1955. Together, they raised six children: Jane, Sally, Anne, John, Mary Anne, and Thomas. They also delighted in the presence of 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Reception of his body and viewing will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, beginning at 10:30 AM, followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM at Saint Andrew Church, 81 Swamp Road, Newtown. The principal celebrant will be the Most Reverend Edward M. Deliman. Deacon of the Mass and homilist will be Deacon Joseph Bernauer. Interment will be at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Philadelphia.
