REVEREND JAMES F. HUGHES

1925 – 2016

Reverend James F. Hughes, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, died at Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, on Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Father Hughes was born on July 12, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Frank J. Hughes and the late Agnes D. Hughes. Father Hughes attended Saint Lawrence Parochial School, Highland Park; Saint Rose of Lima Parochial School, Philadelphia; and Saint Thomas More High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Hughes was ordained on May 10, 1952, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O’Hara, C.S.C. Father Hughes served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, Harrisburg; Our Lady of Charity Parish, Brookhaven; Immaculate Conception Parish, Jenkintown; Saint Gabriel Parish, Philadelphia; Visitation B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia, Notre Dame De Lourdes Parish, Swarthmore; Mother of Divine Providence Parish, King of Prussia; and Saint David Parish, Willow Grove. In September 1981, he was appointed Pastor, Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2000.

The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, Media, on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at 6:00 PM, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be held at 7:30 PM. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Hughes at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Louis A. DeSimone, Reverend Monsignor Ralph Chiefo, Reverend Paul M. Kennedy, Reverend David B. Machain, Reverend Monsignor James E. Mortimer, and Reverend Monsignor William O’Donnell. Monsignor O’Donnell will be the homilist.

Father Hughes is survived by his sister, Sister Agnes Hughes, I.H.M., and his nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken.
