1939- 2021

Reverend John M. Harkins, Retired, Resident, Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, died on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

Father Harkins was born on March 23, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John Joseph Harkins and Golda Burt. Father Harkins attended Saint Edward Parochial School, Philadelphia and Saint Joseph’s College High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Harkins was ordained on May 22, 1965, at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia by Most Reverend John J. Krol. Father Harkins served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Stanislaus Parish, Lansdale; Saint Joseph Parish, Ambler; Saint John the Evangelist Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Ambrose Parish, Philadelphia . In 1985 he was appointed Pastor at Saint Michael Parish, Philadelphia, where he served until June 2000. He also served on the Faculty at Bishop McDevitt High School. Father Harkins retired in 2014.

Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Ambrose Church, Philadelphia, on Friday, February 5, 2021, at 9:00 A.M. followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Harkins at 11:00 A.M. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor Thomas A. Murray, Reverend G. Dennis Gill, Reverend Charles J. Ravert, and Reverend Monsignor Thomas M. Mullin will be the homilist.

Father Harkins is survived by his nephews and neices. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham.
