Casa del Carmen Academy provides low-income families with affordable child care. Through the PNC Bank Grow Up Great Grant®, Casa del Carmen has been able to acquire books, a literacy program, new carpet and a projector for a new Literacy Learning Lab which will promote math, literacy, and technology skills. Employees from the PNC Bank Women Connect and Emerging Professionals employee affinity groups worked throughout the week painting and assembling new furniture for the Literacy Learning Lab.
“Through PNC Grow Up Great®, my colleagues continue to deliver on PNC’s commitment to the community by focusing their volunteerism in support of early education,” said Paula Fryland, PNC Bank regional president for Philadelphia-Southern New Jersey. “While it may not have been planned this way from the start, we can think of nothing more fitting than joining with Catholic Social Services to build a preschool library at Casa del Carmen that enables our future leaders to experience the joy of reading ahead of the Papal visit to our city.”
Casa del Carmen was founded in 1954 and serves mostly the Hispanic community and other immigrant groups in North Philadelphia. It’s a Benephilly Center that offers screening and enrollment of federal, state and local benefits as well as offering family support programs, and a licensed pre-school academy. Casa del Carmen also provides emergency services such as clothing, food, rent and mortgage assistance among other services.
