This week’s column is adapted from the Archbishop’s opening remarks to the October 21 national “Women in the New Evangelization” conference, held at Doylestown’s Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

Reverence for the sanctity of the human person starts with a defense of the unborn child.  The right to life is foundational.  Without it, all other rights and all other discussions of justice and human dignity are built on sand.

So many precious and innocent lives were senselessly lost in an evil manner and it fills all of us with an unspeakable sadness.

Over the Labor Day weekend I got a note from a friendly Catholic scholar who’s an expert in the history of religions.  She teaches at one of Europe’s large secular universities.  And while she doesn’t publicize her faith, neither does she hide it – a fact which does not always help her academic career.
