Archdiocese of Philadelphia to Kick Off 46th Annual Rice Bowl Initiative

Rice Bowl is a Lenten almsgiving program of Catholic Relief Services, the official relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

For the 46th consecutive year, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will kick-off Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Rice Bowl, the nationwide Lenten program that provides people of all ages with ways to put their faith into action through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Most Reverend John J. McIntyre, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, will preside over this year’s Rice Bowl blessing and kick-off.  He will be joined by Ms. Anne H. Ayella, CRS Diocesan Director; Mr. James Amato, Secretary for Catholic Human Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; Ms. Lizanne Hagedorn, Executive Director of Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (NDS); and B.J. Brown, Pastoral Associate, Old St. Joseph Church (Philadelphia) whose parish’s food cupboard benefits in part from Rice Bowl contributions. All will offer remarks regarding Rice Bowl’s impact locally and globally.

The blessing of Rice Bowls will take place with adherence to guidelines set forth by governmental health agencies. It will be streamed live beginning at 11:00 a.m. via the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ArchPhila.

Given limitations on group size inside the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center Auditorium, no television cameras or still photographers will be permitted in the Auditorium.
