Archdiocese of Philadelphia Reschedules Ordination of Priests, Transitional Deacons and Acolytes

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia today announced the rescheduling of several liturgical celebrations, previously scheduled for May 2020.  The rescheduled celebrations include the ordination of priests, permanent deacons, transitional deacons and the institution of acolytes.  The Ordination of Transitional Deacons, which was originally scheduled for May 9, 2020 will now be combined with the Ordination of Permanent Deacons and will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The ordination of priests will take place at the Cathedral Basilica on Saturday, June 20, 2022.   The Mass with the Institution of Acolytes is postponed until September 12, 2020 in Saint Martin’s Chapel at Saint Charles Seminary

Bishop Timothy C. Senior, Rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, said, “The rescheduled dates have been selected in the hope that, by the middle of June, the current COVID 19 health crisis pandemic will have subsided such that liturgical celebrations of this kind will be able to be held. However, these dates remain tentative subject to the directives of our civil and health authorities. We continue to pray fervently for all who are suffering from the Coronavirus, for their families and caregivers, for healthcare workers, first responders and all who are putting their lives at risk for the benefit of others.”

Editor’s Note: Founded in 1832, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been forming men for priestly service in the Catholic Church for more than 180 years.  In August 2019, the seminary reported an overall enrollment of 165 seminarians.  Saint Charles’ seminarian population is becoming increasingly diverse with approximately 30% of its students now coming from Asian, Latino, or African countries or nationalities. Of the 42 new seminarians, 19 are seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and there are 75 new or returning seminarians for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia studying at St. Charles. With the generosity of many, these young seminarians are able to successfully transform into the compassionate and loyal priests and inspiring leaders of tomorrow’s Church.
