Archdiocesan High Schools and Parish Elementary Schools to Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day

Bridget Brown, a renowned inclusion advocate will speak to students at Saint Katharine of Siena School in Wayne (Delaware County) and Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor (Delaware County).

Bridget Brown, a renowned inclusion advocate, actress, global messenger for the Special Olympics, and co-founder of the organization Butterflies for Change, will visit Saint Katharine of Siena School (SKS) in Wayne (Delaware County) and Archbishop John Carroll High School (Carroll) in Radnor (Delaware County) as part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

Ms. Brown’s presentation is titled, “Dwell in the Possibilities.” She will share her life journey as a woman with Down Syndrome and her story as the first person with a disability to be included in mainstream classes in her school district. Students will learn about the importance of inclusion and how they can be a champion in the lives of people with disabilities. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session at the conclusion of each talk.

Every year, on March 21, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks.

March 21 is symbolic because people with Down Syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of DS chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks.

In 2017, Bridget met with Pope Francis a part of a Vatican-sponsored conference dedicated to catechesis for those with intellectual disabilities.

The events are sponsored by the Rising Together Alliance whose mission is to provide children with intellectual disabilities the opportunity for an inclusive Catholic education in their local parochial schools.  The Rising Together Alliance welcomes all children to an inclusive Catholic education and to increase the capabilities of the parochial schools within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to provide meaningful inclusion.
