Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez to Celebrate the Annual Cultural Heritage Mass

This annual liturgical celebration highlights the diverse cultural heritage of the Catholic community in the five-county Philadelphia region.
It will be streamed live to Facebook.com/ArchPhila and Facebook.com/pcmrphilly.

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will be the principal celebrant and homilist at the Annual Cultural Heritage Mass. Priests from 14 apostolates serving 36 parishes with distinct cultural and pastoral services will concelebrate this liturgy. 

The Mass highlights the rich history and cultural diversity of the Catholic community in the five-county Archdiocese, which is comprised of people tracing their origins to Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean, and Native American communities.

The Liturgy will feature representatives from approximately 28 different national, ethnic, and/or Eastern Catholic Church traditions. Scripture readings and prayers will be proclaimed in seven different languages including Polish, Konkani, Bahasa, French, Malayalam, Kuranko, and Swahili.  Including English, 20 different languages will be spoken or sung at the Cultural Heritage Mass this year. Additionally, nine choirs will provide multilingual music throughout the Mass.

Participants dressed in native attire will walk in the opening procession behind banners that display their country of origin. The Mass theme this year is “Announce the Good News of Jesus Christ: Open Windows of Dialogue and Spaces of Fraternity.” All are welcome to attend.

The Cultural Heritage Mass is an initiative of the Office for Pastoral Care for Migrants and Refugees. It is sponsored by the Pontifical Mission Societies and the Office of Cultural Ministries which includes the Office for Black Catholics and the Office for Hispanic Catholics.
