Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez to Celebrate Solemn Funeral Mass for Most Reverend Robert Patrick Maginnis, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia

Bishop Maginnis died on Wednesday, September 14th at the age of 88 following a lengthy illness.

The Solemn Funeral Mass for Most Reverend Robert Patrick Maginnis, retired Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Bishop of Siminina, will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Thursday, September 22, 2022.

A detailed schedule and information for media who wish to cover this event follows below.

A press audio/video mult-box clean feed will be provided in the Cathedral parking lot with multiple HD-SDI video (BNC) and mic/line (XLR) connections. Crews will need a live truck or recording device. Please note that due to construction in the lot beside the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, media outlets will need longer cords than previous years to plug into the mult-box. Television cameras will not be permitted in the Cathedral due to projected space limitations and will need to utilize the live feed provided by the Archdiocese. The feed will be available beginning at 9:00 a.m.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. the motorcade will arrive at the Cathedral. Bishop Maginnis’ body will be transferred to the vestibule of Cathedral for the Rite of Reception of the Body. Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, will preside over this brief ceremony. Following, Midmorning Prayer for the Dead will be celebrated and Bishop Maginnis’ body will lie in state for public viewing until the casket is closed at 11:00 a.m.

At 11:00 a.m. the Entrance Procession and Solemn Funeral Mass begin.  Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will be the principal celebrant. Reverend Monsignor Michael J. Carroll, who was ordained to the Priesthood with Bishop Maginnis in 1961, will be the homilist.

The mult-box feed and live stream will end after the Funeral Mass.

The Rite of Committal will take place privately at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Montgomery County.
