On December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis invited faithful throughout the Universal Church to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a time to meditate upon and more actively respond to the infinite mercy of God.
Since that time, parishioners in the Archdiocese have been invited to live the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy through various initiatives at the Archdiocesan and parish levels. The year concludes on Sunday, November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ. The theme for the Jubilee Year of Mercy is Merciful like the Father.
Throughout the year, Holy Doors were opened in every Cathedral around the world as well as in particular shrines. The faithful who make a pilgrimage and pass through a Holy Door receive a plenary indulgence, which is the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin.
Special permission was granted to the five National Shrines located in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to open a Holy Door for the Extraordinary Jubilee along with the principal Holy Door located at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The Holy Doors of Mercy of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be closed according to the calendar below:
