The Vocation Office for the Diocesan Priesthood in Conjunction with the Office for Black Catholics to Celebrate the Life of the First Recognized Black Catholic Priest in the Country

A cause for the canonization of Reverend Augustus Tolton is underway

The Vocation Office for the Diocesan Priesthood and the Office for Black Catholics will offer a presentation on the life of Reverend Augustus Tolton, the first African American Roman Catholic priest in the United States.

Father Tolton was born into slavery in Missouri in 1854. At a young age, he escaped to the North with his mother and siblings. He experienced and overcame much racial prejudice both in society and the Church.  Unable to attend a seminary in the United States, he travelled to Rome to study for the Priesthood. In 1886, he was ordained a priest and returned to Illinois to minister to its Black Catholic community.

An original short film on Father Tolton’s vocation will be premiered, along with a vocation presentation by two seminarians.
