Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (NDS) will celebrate National School Lunch Week (NSLW) with a special day at Saint Athanasius School. Three student athletes from La Salle University who play basketball and soccer will speak to students during their lunch period about the importance of eating a healthy, nourishing meal.

The NSLW campaign is made possible by the non-profit School Nutrition Association. This year’s campaign theme, “School Lunch: Recipes for Success,” is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the school’s cafeteria staff and students who participate in the school lunch program.

Ms. Brooke Mullen, Assistant Director of NDS said, “In honor of National School Lunch Week, NDS is celebrating the school lunch program and the importance of well-balanced, nourishing meals for growing students.  Consuming a variety of foods during the school day is critical for students to have energy to grow, learn, and be physically active at all stages of life. La Salle University student athletes understand the value of healthy foods for performance in school and athletics, and we are thrilled to have them speak to the St. Athanasius students!”

For the 2017-2018 academic year, NDS partnered with 102 schools including Saint Athanasius School to make the National School Lunch Program available to students at a reduced price or no cost. Each school lunch provides a student with one third of their daily requirement for calories and key growth nutrients. Each day, students are offered whole grains, protein-rich foods, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or fat-free milk.

NDS sponsors the federally funded National School Lunch Program to ensure that more than 30,000 students have access to a healthy, nourishing lunch each school day throughout the Philadelphia region.
