REVEREND JOHN J. NEVINS

 1931 – 2018

Reverend John J. Nevins, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, Essington, died on Saturday, June 23, 2018.

Father Nevins was born on July 31, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He is the son of the late John J. Nevins, Sr. and the late Florence (Mellon) Nevins. Father Nevins attended Saint Martin of Tours Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Saint Joseph’s Preparatory High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Nevins was ordained on May 11, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Church, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O’Hara, C.S.C.  Father Nevins served as Parochial Vicar at Mary Queen of Peace Parish, Pottsville; he served on the faculty at Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia; College Professor, Gwynedd-Mercy University, Gwynedd Valley; Pastor, Saint Hugh of Cluny Parish, and Assumption B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia; Parochial Vicar, Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish, Phoenixville and Saint Aloysius Parish, Pottstown.  In 1996, Father Nevins was appointed Pastor, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, Essington, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2006.

Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Albert the Great Church, Huntingdon Valley, on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at 9:00 AM, followed by a viewing.  Most Reverend Edward M. Deliman will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Nevins at 11:00 AM.  Among those concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis, Reverend Monsignor Francis X. Schmidt, Reverend Monsignor James T. McDonough, Reverend Monsignor Ignatius Murray.  Reverend Patrick Sieber, O.F.M.,will be the homilist.

Father Nevins is survived by his nephews Matthew Rinehart and Michael Rinehart, his niece, Nancy Morlock and many grand-nieces and nephews.  Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
