This Rite of Consecration, one of the oldest sacramentals in the Catholic Church, is a recognized vocation apart from religious life, marriage, the lay state, or ordained clergy. By the virtue of chastity, the virgin preserves her virginal state, so that she may be totally for Christ and in Christ for others.
The consecrated virgin is not required to take on any particular work or apostolate. However, the consecrated virgin devotes her time to penance, works of mercy, apostolic activities, and prayer, with a special focus on the intentions of her Bishop, clergy and the needs of her diocese.
Currently, there are around 230 consecrated virgins in the United States, four within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and approximately 3,000 worldwide.
