Young, At-Risk Children Who Attend The Saint Gabriel’s Out-Of-School Time Program Prepare Thanksgiving Feast For Their Families
Young students from the Saint Gabriel’s Out-of-School-Time Program (OST) will prepare a traditional Thanksgiving Feast for their families. Saint Gabe’s, as it is affectionately called by students and staff, is one of ten OST programs operated by CSS throughout the five-county metropolitan area.
Wednesday, November 21, 2018
4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
2917 Dickinson Street
Philadelphia, PA 19146
Nearly 22 second and third grade students will roll up their sleeves to prepare the meal from scratch with the help of OST staff. For these young students, cooking the meal is more than just a fun holiday activity; it’s a culmination of their current project-based learning (PBL) cycle. PBL is a teaching method that helps students build real-world skills.
Victoria Robson, Director of Saint Gabe’s said, “Since PBL is meant to be student-driven, the kids collectively decided what items to cook and what decorations to create. All of the children will be involved in cooking and supervised by adults. They are making turkey slices with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce.”
Established in 2013, St. Gabe’s serves at- risk children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. During the academic year, the program supports working families by offering a safe and academically inspiring environment to children and youth. Dedicated staff provide challenging and engaging learning experiences that help children develop the social, emotional, physical, and academic skills vital to future educational achievement.
In addition, St. Gabe’s is an Archbishop’s Benefit for Children (ABC) beneficiary. ABC is a fundraising initiative of the Catholic Charities Appeal. It supports the daily operations and special projects of CSS programs that provide help and create hope for over 16,000 children each year. This year ABC will culminate with the 63rd Annual ABC Christmas Gala. 29 students from St. Gabe’s will attend the party slated for Tuesday, December 18th.
