Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary to Host the 2022 Cardinals’ Forum
The discussion will consider the Sunday Liturgy
in light of continuing debates about its celebration in the Church
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary will host The Cardinals’ Forum on Tuesday, August 30, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in Vianney Hall Auditorium on the Overbrook campus of the Seminary. This year’s discussion, entitled “From Sunday to Sunday,” will consider the most recent papal document on celebrating the Sunday liturgy.
Following the varied and polemical responses to his earlier legislation regarding the use of the previous forms of the Latin Mass, Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter in motu proprio in June to provide “prompts or cues for reflections that can aid in the contemplation of the beauty and truth of Christian celebration.” Entitled “Desiderio desideravi” (“I have earnestly desired”), the document references the tensions present around the styles and manners of worshipping, with an eye toward re-focusing attention on the Christ-event being celebrated.
Seminary faculty will offer thoughts on this new document and engage the audience in a discussion of the topic. The event is open to the public, with free admission, and will also be livestreamed via https://www.facebook.com/StCharlesSem.
Reverend David Friel, the Archdiocesan Director of Vocations, will moderate the forum. Panelists include Dr. John Haas, the Cardinal Krol Chair of Moral Theology; Reverend Thomas Dailey, OSFS, the Cardinal Foley Chair of Homiletics & Social Communications; and Dr. Nathan Knutson, the Francesco Chair in Sacred Music.
Reverend Keith Chylinski, the newly appointed Rector of the Seminary, will introduce the event. “It’s a blessing for us to open our year of formation with this event. The topic is so important, not only for the seminarians, as future pastors in parishes, but to all the People of God because our understanding and celebration of the Sunday liturgy is essential to our life together as the Church,” said Father Chylinski.
The annual series was named for the first endowed professorships at the Seminary. Its purpose is to advance the academic formation of Seminary students and provide continuing education for the lay faithful about topics of contemporary concern in the Church. Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary was founded by Bishop Francis Kenrick as the diocesan seminary for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1832, making it the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the Archdiocese. In August 2022, the seminary expected an overall enrollment of 133 seminarians. The seminary population is becoming increasingly diverse with approximately 31% of its students now coming from Asian, Latino, or African countries. Of the 29 newly enrolled seminarians, 11 are studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which now brings the total number of seminarians for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to 68.
