Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will join approximately 150 volunteers at Assumption B.V.M. Parish in Feasterville, Bucks County, to fill breakfast bags for homebound seniors. This is the first of six Mercy Works Service Projects in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that will take place during the year 2001. These service projects flow from the Jubilee Year 2000 and are based upon the Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the Hungry/Give Drink to the Thirsty, Tend the Sick, Clothe the Naked, Shelter the Homeless, Visit Those in Prison and Bury the Dead.

The Mercy Works Service Projects are based upon existing Archdiocesan volunteer efforts and are intended to be reminders that we are called upon to serve our neighbor all year long. The Feed the Hungry service project is being done in conjunction with Aid For Friends, a non-profit organization which provides free food and friendship to the isolated and homebound and serves 2,700 clients in the Greater Philadelphia area with the help of 13,000 volunteers. Assumption B.V.M. Parish in Feasterville, Bucks County, is one of 120 Archdiocese of Philadelphia parishes that work with Aid For Friends year round. There are also 140 groups from Archdiocesan schools that help Aid For Friends in a variety of ways. Volunteers for the Feed the Hungry Mercy Works Service Project will primarily be youth from the five-county archdiocesan area.

Each of the Mercy Works Service Projects will take place in a different Vicariate of the Archdiocese:
