Nutritional Development Services Partners With Catholic Housing And Community Services To Provide 100 Local Senior Citizens With Wholesome Holiday Meals

Senior citizens in need of assistance obtaining food this Advent season will get a boost thanks to a partnership between two agencies of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Nutritional Development Services (NDS) and Catholic Housing and Community Services (CHCS). Dedicated staff from NDS and CHCS will gather to fill packages with wholesome holiday meals. 100 seniors from the CHCS Senior Housing Program will receive these packages, which they can share with their loved ones.

Each package will include mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and applesauce collected by students from Saint Christopher Catholic School in Northeast Philadelphia. In addition, NDS’ Community Food Program will provide each senior with a small turkey or ham.

Though NDS and CHCS have a longstanding partnership, this is first time the two agencies have partnered to provide holiday meal packages to seniors in need. Throughout the year, NDS helps combat senior hunger by stocking the shelves of food cupboards located within CHCS’ senior housing communities.

Ms. Brooke Mullen, Assistant Director of Community Relations for NDS said, “NDS is grateful for the opportunity to share food with those in need, year-round, but especially around the holidays. Unfortunately, senior citizens’ need for food assistance continues to grow in our area; providing these individuals with a basic need like food is the least we can do after their years of generous giving to our church. It is our pleasure to collaborate with staff from Catholic Housing and Community Services to offer their residents a delicious, satisfying holiday meal.”

Editor’s Note: For over forty years, NDS’ mission has been to serve children and those in need with healthy food and food-related resources. NDS accomplishes its mission in two distinct ways: by administering the federally-funded child nutrition programs and through the privately supported Community Food Program.
