REVEREND JOHN E. MULGREW

1929 – 2019

Reverend John E. Mulgrew, Pastor Emeritus, Holy Spirit Parish, Philadelphia, died on Sunday, November 3, 2019.

Father Mulgrew was born on February 3, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Patrick Mulgrew and the late Catherine (Healy) Mulgrew.  Father Mulgrew attended Our Lady of the Rosary Parochial School, Philadelphia; and Saint Thomas More High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Mulgrew was ordained on May 10, 1956, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O’Hara, C.S.C.  Father Mulgrew served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Patrick Parish, Pottsville; Faculty, Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia; Parochial Vicar, Epiphany Parish, Norristown and Saint Matthias Parish, Bala Cynwyd. In 1982, he was appointed Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, Philadelphia, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 1999.  He then served as Senior Priest, Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, before retiring in June, 2004.

A viewing will be held at Nativity B.V.M. Church, Media, on Friday, November 15, 2019, at 9:00 AM.  Most Reverend Edward M. Deliman will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Mulgrew at 11:00 AM. Among those concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor Ralph J. Chieffo, Reverend Monsignor Joseph P. McGeown, Reverend Edward H. Bell, Reverend William J. Chiriaco, Reverend Monsignor William Quinn (Diocese of Camden), and Reverend John Baron (Archdiocese of Newark) will be the homilist.

            Father Mulgrew is survived by his nephews, John E. Mulgrew, Francis X. Mulgrew and Patrick C. Mulgrew and their families.  Interment will be at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
