In a letter recently sent to all parishes, Reverend Monsignor Arthur E. Rodgers, Director of the Archdiocesan Pontifical Mission Societies, said, “World Mission Sunday joins all Catholics of the world into one community of faith. At Mass on this Sunday, we recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be Missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist and by giving as best we can to help Missionaries world-wide.”

The Mass, which will be streamed live via https://vimeo.com/event/17522, will commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and kick-off a yearlong anniversary celebration. The Mass will also bring together different cultures representing Mission areas, in Latin America, Nigeria, Philippines, and Vietnam to share in this celebration, which is taking place in every parish in the Archdiocese, as well as, every parish and school throughout the world. Additionally, national and Archdiocesan winners of the Missionary Childhood Association’s Artwork Contest will be honored during Mass.

Editor’s Note: The Pontifical Mission Societies were formed as a means of supporting the preaching of the Gospel to every nation. The prayers, humanitarian relief, and material support generously given and distributed through the Pontifical Mission Societies aid the Holy See in 1,111 mission dioceses to help build up the Church throughout the world, especially where Christianity is burgeoning. The Societies care for and support these mission dioceses until they become self-sufficient.

There are three Mission Societies:   The Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the evangelization efforts of the local Church.  The Missionary Childhood Association educates children about their part in the Church’s Missionary. The Society of Saint Peter the Apostle trains the next generation of missionary clergy and consecrated religious.
