REVEREND MONSIGNOR JAMES E. MORTIMER

 1927 – 2019

Reverend Monsignor James E. Mortimer, Pastor Emeritus, Saint William Parish, Philadelphia, died on Saturday, February 2, 2019.

Monsignor Mortimer was born on May 9, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late James E. Mortimer and the late Ellen (Deegan) Mortimer.  Monsignor Mortimer attended Saint Bartholomew Parochial School, Philadelphia; Saint Joseph’s College High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Monsignor Mortimer was ordained on May 10, 1952, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O’Hara, C.S.C. and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope Paul VI on January 18, 1976.  Monsignor Mortimer served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Jerome Parish, Tamaqua; Faculty, Saint Thomas More High School for Boys, Philadelphia and Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia; High School Principal, Saint Pius X High School, Pottstown and Cardinal O’Hara High School, Springfield.  In 1980, he was appointed Pastor, Saint William Parish, Philadelphia, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2002.

Reception of the Body will be held at Saint William (lower) Church, Philadelphia on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing until 8:00 PM.

A viewing will also be held at Saint William (upper) Church, Philadelphia, on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM.   Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Mortimer at 11:00 AM.  Among those concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor William J. J. O’Donnell, Reverend David B. Machain, Reverend Alfonso J. Concha and Reverend Joseph G. Watson will be the homilist.

Monsignor Mortimer is survived by his sister, Ellen V. Jones and nephews and nieces.  Interment will be at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Penndel.
