REVEREND JOSEPH W. McCLOSKEY
1933 – 2019
Reverend Joseph W. McCloskey died at Saint Joseph’s Manor, Meadowbrook, on Thursday, May 2, 2019.
Father McCloskey was born on July 13, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late James A. McCloskey and Julia (Flanagan) McCloskey. Father McCloskey attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Southeast (Bishop Neumann) High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father McCloskey was ordained on May 13, 1961, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John J. Krol. Father McCloskey served as Parochial Vicar, Visitation B.V.M. Parish, Norristown; Holy Saviour Parish, Linwood; Saint Joseph Parish, Warrington; Saint Bartholomew Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Cecilia Parish, Philadelphia; Immaculate Conception Parish, Levittown; Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Philadelphia; Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, Chester. He served as a U.S. Navy Military Chaplain from 1969 to 1992. When he returned, he served as Parochial Vicar, Saint John Baptist Vianney Parish, Gladwyne. He also served as Pastor, Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, Levittown; Parochial Vicar, Saint Monica Parish; Chaplain, Saint Agnes Medical Center. He also served as Senior Priest, Holy Spirit Parish Philadelphia. He retired from active ministry in October 2005.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Queen of Peace Church, Ardsley, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 9:00 A.M., followed by a viewing. Most Reverend John J. McIntyre will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father McCloskey at Queen of Peace Church, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 11:00 AM. Among those concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis, Reverend Monsignor James A. Grant, Reverend Monsignor Louis A. D’Addezio, Reverend Monsignor Michael J. Carroll. Reverend Joseph J. Meehan will be the homilist.
Father McCloskey is survived by his sister, Marie Dougherty; nieces Julie Schuck and Marianne Shervin, and nephews Jim, Patrick and Joe Dougherty. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
