REVEREND JAMES W. GORMLEY

 1929 – 2019

Reverend James W. Gormley, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Parish, Stowe, died on Friday, February 22, 2019.

Father Gormley was born on July 20, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late William J. Gormley and the late Leota (Yeager) Gormley.  Father Gormley attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parochial School, Philadelphia and Southeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Gormley was ordained on May 8, 1954, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O’Hara, C.S.C.  Father Gormley served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Joseph Parish, Summit Hill; SS. Simon & Jude Parish, Bethlehem; Saint Francis de Sales Parish, Lenni; Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Abington; Seven Dolors Parish, Wyndmoor; Saint Edmond Parish, Philadelphia; Saint John the Baptist Parish, Philadelphia; Holy Innocents Parish, Philadelphia.  He also served as Pastor, Saint Stephen Parish, Philadelphia.  In 1988, he was appointed Pastor, Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Parish, Stowe, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2004.

The Reception of the Body will be held at the Motherhouse Chapel, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Merion, on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 6:00 PM., followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Gormley at 7:00 PM.  Among those concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor Bernard J. Trinity, Reverend Francis X. McKee, Reverend Kevin Gallagher and Reverend Monsignor John Campbell (Diocese of Allentown) will be the homilist.

A viewing will take place at Holy Trinity Parish, Epiphany Church, Longport, N.J. on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 10:00 A.M., followed by the Liturgy of the Word, and the Rite of Committal at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing, NJ.

There will be a Memorial Mass at Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church, Stowe, on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 12:00 PM.

Father Gormley is survived by his cousins, Kathy and Marty Metzler, the Walsh and Burke families.
