The Fall General Assembly Meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Baltimore last week resulted in the election of five graduates of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary as Chairmen-Elect of five of its six conference committees. 

The Chairman-Elect, their committees and their graduation years are listed below.

• Most Reverend Joseph Kurtz, ‘72, Archbishop of Louisville, was elected Chairman-elect of the Committee For Religious Liberty. 
• Most Reverend Kevin Rhodes, ‘79 (College Seminary), Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, was elected Chairman-elect of the Committee on Doctrine. 
• Most Reverend Joseph Cistone, ‘75, Bishop of Saginaw, was elected Chairman-elect of the Committee on National Collections.
• Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, ‘84, Bishop of Arlington, was elected Chairman-elect of the Committee on Communications.
• Most Reverend Nelson Perez, ‘89, Bishop of Cleveland, was elected Chairman-elect of the Committee on Cultural Diversity.

“This is a very proud moment for the entire Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary community, which joins together to offer prayerful best wishes and congratulations to five of our episcopal alumni on their elections to chair committees for the Bishops’ Conference. They exemplify servant leadership after the heart of Jesus Christ. Our current seminarians can look to them for inspiration as they prepare for priestly ministry and a life of service to the Church and Her people.”

The five committee chairmen-elect will serve one year before beginning three-year terms at the conclusion of the USCCB’s 2018 Fall General Assembly.

Editor’s Note: Founded in 1832, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been forming men for priestly service in the Catholic Church for more than 180 years.  In August 2017, the seminary reported an overall enrollment of 167 seminarians, an 11% increase over the spring 2017 enrollment and the largest overall enrollment since 2004.
