Catholic Housing and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Receives Grant to Help Senior Citizens Apply for SNAP Benefits

Catholic Housing and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CHCS) has received a $30,000 grant through a partnership with Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) to help eligible senior citizens enroll in the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The grant, made possible by the Walmart Foundation, will support outreach and enrollment assistance by CHCS.

CHCS continues to provide application assistance to senior citizens aged 60 and older who earn less than $2,024 per month, through their In-Home Support Program in South Philadelphia, Senior Community Centers, Parish Outreach Sites, and Affordable Senior Housing Communities. Social service workers at each location are able to help individuals complete the SNAP application process.

“Walmart’s partnership with CCUSA has provided us with the resources to reach out into the community and make applying for SNAP accessible to seniors”, said Ms. Karen Becker, Director of In-Home Support and Senior Centers. “This is our third year participating in this initiative, expanding our outreach to urban and rural communities as well as non- English speaking seniors”.

Case managers are also available to provide assistance to Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Vietnamese speaking seniors.  To locate a resource, please call CHCS’s Elder Care Helpline at 1-888-679-7669.
