Archdiocese Of Philadelphia Responds To Pope Francis’ Call For International “Share The Journey” Campaign

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate the opening Mass for the observation of “Share the Journey” in the five-county Archdiocese.

Faithful throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are invited to celebrate the opening of Share the Journey, a global public awareness campaign launched by Pope Francis that aims to strengthen the relationship between migrants and their local communities. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will be the principal celebrant and homilist for the opening Mass in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which will also honor religious jubilarians.

Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul
18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Philadelphia, PA 19103

Sponsored by Caritas Internationalis, a global confederation of 165 national development agencies, Share the Journey promotes the culture of encounter in communities where migrants and refugees leave and return to, where they travel through, and where they make their new homes. The campaign aims to dispel fear and inspire communities to build relationships with those forced to leave their native lands due to violence, oppression, famine, and other hardships.

The Mass will include a procession of migrants and refugees from local parishes as well as men and women who have entered the country through the Refugee Resettlement Program administered by Catholic Social Service of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS).

Earlier this year, CSS reopened its Refugee Resettlement Program with referrals coming through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). So far, the program has welcomed 24 people including families from Ukraine and Afghanistan, and expects to receive as many as 32 individuals by the end of September.

In addition, religious priests, sisters, and brothers celebrating milestone anniversaries of 25 years or more will be honored.  Of this year’s 283 jubilarians, many have been keenly focused on matters related to migrants and refugees. The 241 sisters, 36 priests, and  four religious brothers being celebrated represent a combined 16,555 years of consecrated life. Included in this year’s honorees are more than 56 religious men and women who have served 70 years or more.

Share the Journey will be streamed live via Archbishop Chaput’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/archbishopchaput beginning at 11:00 a.m. (EDT).
