Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. to Bless 50-Foot Replica of the World Mission Rosary

The blessing is part of the Observance of the Extraordinary Missionary Month as called for by Pope Francis in his
Extraordinary Year of Mission initiative in the Universal Church.

Following Mass this Sunday evening at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will bless a 50-foot, replica of the World Mission Rosary as part of the commemoration of Extraordinary Missionary Month in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The World Mission Rosary, which was originally developed by Venerable Archbishop Fulton, symbolizes areas around the world where the Catholic Church bears a presence to evangelize and bring temporal assistance to those struggling with poverty, hunger, and civil strife. 

Preceding Mass, all are invited to pray the World Mission Rosary led by Reverend G. Denis Gill, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica Saints Peter and Paul.

Pope Francis designated October 2019 as the Extraordinary Mission Month and culminating celebration within the Extraordianry Year of Mission. The intention of this month is to foster greater awareness of the missio ad gentes or mission to the people and to animate the missionary transformation of Church life and pastoral activity.  It is the culmination

After the blessing, The Rosary will be displayed at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in the Cathedral Basilica. All are invited to come and pray before the Rosary and to write their intentions on ribbons that symbolize Mission areas. The ribbons will be tied to the Rosary and prayed for by Missionaries. In addition, all are invited to venerate the Archdiocesan Mission Cross, a symbol of unity and faith, visited every parish in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia during the Jubilee Year in 2000.  In the center of the cross, is a sacred relic of the “One True Cross.”  


Editor’s Note: The Pontifical Mission Societies, which serve as the driving force for the celebration of the Extraordinary Year of Mission in the Archdiocse of Philadelphia, were formed as a means of supporting the preaching of the Gospel to every nation. The prayers, humanitarian relief, and material support generously given and distributed through the Pontifical Mission Societies aid the Holy See in 1,111 mission dioceses to help build up the Church throughout the world, especially where Christianity is burgeoning. The Societies care for and support these mission dioceses until they become self-sufficient. 

There are three Mission Societies:   The Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the evangelization efforts of the local Church.  The Missionary Childhood Association educates children about their part in the Church’s Missionary. The Society of Saint Peter the Apostle trains the next generation of missionary clergy and consecrated religious.
